When Summer brings hard choices: How Catholic Charities helps families stretch every dollar

For many children, summer begins with the joyful sound of the last school bell ringing.

It marks the start of carefree days filled with sunshine, play, and freedom.

But for some families across Central and Northern Missouri, that same bell signals something very different: the loss of reliable meals, daily routines and a safety net they quietly depended on all year.

Throughout the school year, classrooms provide far more than education.

For many children, schools offer nutritious breakfasts and lunches, stable routines and a place of safety and connection.

When school doors close for the summer, families are suddenly faced with difficult choices.

How do you stretch a grocery budget when growing children are home all day?

Which bill can wait another month?

What happens when there simply isn’t enough?

Imagine a parent standing in the grocery aisle, calculator in hand, deciding whether this week’s budget can cover both dinner and the electric bill.

These struggles are not distant or abstract.

They belong to our neighbors, parishioners, coworkers and friends.

Summer can amplify financial strain, especially for seniors on fixed incomes and households already navigating economic uncertainty.

Yet amid these challenges, Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri (CCCNMO) stands ready to offer not only immediate support, but pathways toward long-term stability and hope.

To help families prepare for the summer months, CCCNMO intentionally hosted its annual Community Resource Fair in May, just as the school year was ending and summer was beginning.

Held at the Jefferson City office and generously sponsored by Mid America Bank, the event brought together a wide network of local organizations dedicated to serving our community.

Families connected with financial literacy educators, housing resources, healthcare services and nonprofit partners, all under one roof.

Yet people came for something far deeper than information or giveaways.

They came seeking connection, reassurance and the quiet relief of knowing they were not facing life’s challenges alone.

Growth and fresh perspectives shaped this year’s fair.

Twenty-five percent of participating vendors were new to the event, reflecting the strength and collaboration of our community.

Families learned about programs such as Faith Maternity Care, which supports pregnant women through housing, education and employment opportunities.

Representatives from Mid America Bank shared practical guidance about building healthy financial futures and establishing trusted banking relationships.

When families save money on basic necessities, the benefits extend far beyond today.

A bag of groceries can become a utility payment kept current.

A garden bed can become fresh produce on a family’s table.

Financial guidance can become freedom from debt.

A college savings account can become a dream made possible.

This vision of empowerment lies at the heart of Catholic Charities’s mission.

Our goal is not simply to respond to crises, but to help prevent them.

Through our client-choice food pantry, families can supplement their nutritional needs and redirect limited resources toward rent, utilities or emergency savings.

Seasonal garden beds allow neighbors to grow fresh produce for their households.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program delivers essential nutrition to seniors.

Our Predatory Loan Relief program helps individuals break free from high-interest debt, while Family Immigration Services guides families through complex legal journeys with patience, dignity and compassion.

Each service is rooted in a simple truth: no one should have to walk through hardship alone.

Summer has a way of magnifying both joy and challenge.

Yet throughout Central and Northern Missouri, neighbors continue to care for neighbors.

That is the beauty of our community and the heart of Catholic Charities.

When families face difficult choices, they should not have to face them alone.

Whether through a shared meal, a helping hand or a community coming together in service, we are reminded that hope grows strongest when it is shared.

If you feel called to be part of this mission, we invite you to learn more about volunteering or supporting Catholic Charities.

Together, we can ensure that every family knows they are seen, valued and never alone.
