Father Roberto Ike, administrator of St. Andrew Parish in Holts Summit, presided at the sixth annual Fr. Tolton Legacy Society Celebration Mass in Columbia. Joining him at the altar was Deacon William Seibert, who assists the pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Jefferson City. The celebration marks the April anniversaries of Servant of God Father Augustus Tolton’s first and priestly ordination. Born into a family of enslaved people in Missouri, he became the Roman Catholic Church’s first recognizably Black priest in 1886. He is under serious consideration for being declared a saint.
