Members of the St. Margaret of Antioch Quilting Group from Osage Bend and Donald Stokes of Cathedral of St. Joseph parish in Jefferson City gather around the quilt they created to mark the 200th-anniversary of the founding of Cole County.

The quilters and embroiderer displayed their handiwork at a brief ceremony May 20 to kick off the bicentennial observance at historical Lohman’s Landing near the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City.

Cole County Presiding Commissioner Samuel Bushman summoned the quilters in February 2019 to design and execute the history- and patriotism-themed quilt after seeing a similar work they created for a parish fund raiser.

The county was formed on Nov. 16, 1820 — several months before Missouri became a state.

Cathy Braun and the late Charlotte Braun designed the quilt, which they and fellow quilters spent hundreds of hours piecing together and hand quilting.

Mr. Stokes embroidered the image of the Courthouse and the county seal.

The bicentennial committee will present the quilt to the county commission for permanent display in the courthouse at the end of this year’s festivities.

“It’s a masterpiece,” stated Deacon Fred Schmitz, St. Margaret of Antioch parish life collaborator.

The official kickoff will begin with tours at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 5, at the Marion Access, off Highway 179 in Marion.  (19 photos)
