Father Louis Nelen, pastor of Cathedral of St. Joseph parish in Jefferson City, will take part in the seventh annual Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan celebration in the diocese on Saturday, May 18 in the Cathedral.

The Missouri Chapter of the National Federations of Filipino American Associations organizes the celebration each year in observance of a beloved Filipino tradition of honoring the Blessed Mother throughout May.

A Rosary and procession begin at 1 p.m. in the Undercroft of the Cathedral, located at 2303 W. Main St., across from Memorial Park.

Fr. Nelen will offer Mass in the Cathedral after the procession.

Children ages 12 and under are encouraged to wear white and be angels in the procession.

After Mass, there will be a potluck meal in the parish hall. People who attend are encouraged to bring their favorite dish and dessert to share.

Tableware, drinks, and lechon/pig roast will be provided.

Catholics throughout the world set aside May as a month to honor the Blessed Mother.

In much of the Philippines, a Catholic-majority nation where Marian devotion abounds, children still bring white flowers and petals to church every afternoon in May to pray the Rosary, and sing traditional Marian hymns.

May 31 brings the culmination of the month-long Flores de Mayo celebration and a nine-day Santacruzan (Holy Cross) novena.

Traditional Santacruzan processions are impressive spectacles involving numerous children and young women and many, many freshly cut aromatic flowers.

These festivities date back to the country’s time as a Spanish colony — hence the use of Spanish words to describe them. It coincided with a groundswell of Marian devotion following Blessed Pope Pius IX’s promulgation of the dogma of Mary’s Immaculate Conception in 1854.
